Sorry for the hiatus. Let’s get to the links from the past week!
Public Radio International wrote a nice article on female LDS missionaries.
Peggy Fletcher Stack wrote a piece on the European LDS Meeting for Women–which features only men on the flyer. The LDS Church has said women will definitely be on the final program.
Jana Riess wrote a nice article in defense of moderate Mormon feminism, with a tip of the cap to Neylan McBaine’s new book. She also summarizes a TribTalk with McBaine, Cynthia Lee, and Shelah Miner/

The indefatigable John Fea has an update on his writing project (the history of the American Bible Society). He includes a tantalizing teaser about Brigham Young ordering bibles from the ABS.
Finally, if you’re close to Charlottesville, Kathleen Flake will be speaking on Thomas Jefferson and Joseph Smith on September 5th at the Academical Village (University of Virginia). If you’d like details (there’s no link), let me know in the comment and I’ll get you the information.
What did we miss?
Will one of you who follows John Fea’s work please remember to mention here again when you hear what story he tells about Brigham Young and the ABS? He may well have material in ABS files that supplements what I have from the BY papers, but unless there were other incidents beyond those I have identified, it was Bernhisel, not BY, who solicited a donation of Bibles when he (Bernhisel) was building the Territorial Library — and 300 of the 350 Bibles requested were in Spanish, not English, which suggests they were for some other purpose than distribution in Utah.
Also, when a representative of the ABS later came to Utah with the intent of distributing Bibles to any poor people here who did not have them, he misunderstood the situation badly enough to address BY as “Your Majesty”!

“The reference comes from an entry in the Bible Society Record (the official periodical of the American Bible Society). The Corresponding Secretary of the ABS notes that he has received a letter from “Governor Brigham Young of Utah” acknowledging “the receipt of a donation of Bibles from the Society, and requesting more.” I have not looked for the actual letter in the archives, but it just might be there. The reference appears in the September 1853 issue of the Bible Society Record.
