I have always felt that we should dress up for church out of respect for the Lord, for his house, for each other — to the extent we can. And while I have always been sympathetic to gender inequality in the church, I find using Sacrament Meeting as a venue for protest terribly insulting. If disgruntled sisters want me on their side, they will refrain from doing stupid things like this.

But whether you agree with the Wear Pants to Church or not, I hope that you agree that our discourse needs to improve, that our charity needs to include everyone– perhaps those within our own congregations even more than anyone.

IMO, one of the best ways to improve the discourse is to have it in the right venues. The Sacrament is the most sacred Church experience I have outside of the temple. This special communion with my Father and reflection on the healing I received through His Son’s atonement is above any issues I may care about.

For me, it’s not about whether women wear pants to Sacrament meeting — I’ve encouraged investigators to come however they dress — it’s about WHY they wear them. Any discourse or demonstration that would suppose to convert this supreme purpose of the Sacrament’s experience into merely its stage illuminates for me its deficient spiritual perspective and I reject it out-of-hand.

Great post. I enjoyed reading it. I have, on occasion when traveling, walked into the temple wearing slacks, and not had a problem. And I’ve started wearing nice pants to the stake baptisms I attend as a member of the primary presidency. Additionally, I have attended wards in more progressive areas where some of the women wear nice pants to church.

But, like you, I live in a conservative area. After the last presidential election, which garnered a lot of “keep your wife in line” type comments for my husband (who doesn’t “keep me in line” at all), I’m not sure I actually have the guts to attend regular church meetings while wearing pants on December 16.
