I don’t know the answer to your question, Azucar, but I think the juxtaposition of murderous happy-valley-ians makes for a good book. (It’s been done, but I think it’s a fun idea.)

Clark: agreed. I think for some of the unironic Happy Valley-ers, Happy Valley is a straightforward, unapologetic, description of how they feel about BYU/Provo. For others, I think it is a conscious act of contestation—if you can’t get rid of the derisive label, appropriate it for your own ends.

Great post. I always wondered about that. The connection to Nauvoo wasn’t something I knew about.

I should add that lots of people here use it quite unironically – or perhaps it’s a double irony? Using the intended ironic term in an ironic way?
