Thank you, Patrick, for a well-written piece that in part reminds us why being under the microscope 24/7 is not always the most comfortable or useful place to be, personally, religiously or academically. I feel I should reference for our readers the 2nd part of your One-Two Punch today as a wonderful and brilliant continuation of these ideas:

What Christopher said... I think we'll all benefit from this much-needed reminder that not all Mormon studies should be played as "Six Degrees of Separation from Mitt Romney."

Nice thoughts, I very much agree. My sense was that we would not only have a lot of superficial analysis but also outright hostility from a very left-leaning academy. Romney getting close enough to heighten curiosity of all things Mormon, but losing, seems ideal to me.

Thanks for this! I, for one, am glad that the Mormon moment is over. Although my scholarship suddenly feels a bit less relevant to the talking heads, it's nice not to be asked what my work on 19th century Mormon missionaries in Tahiti can tell us about the experiences of Mitt Romney's grandfather in Mexico (I'm thinking of a particular incident here).
