Nice thoughts, I very much agree. My sense was that we would not only have a lot of superficial analysis but also outright hostility from a very left-leaning academy. Romney getting close enough to heighten curiosity of all things Mormon, but losing, seems ideal to me.

Fantastic points, Patrick. All important points, and I agree it will be nice that Mormon scholars can go back to writing about Mormonism without feeling the need to tether it to Romney.

Thanks for this! I, for one, am glad that the Mormon moment is over. Although my scholarship suddenly feels a bit less relevant to the talking heads, it’s nice not to be asked what my work on 19th century Mormon missionaries in Tahiti can tell us about the experiences of Mitt Romney’s grandfather in Mexico (I’m thinking of a particular incident here).
