Smallaxe: there should be, yes; but sadly, we've had somewhat of a dearth of intellectual history in Mormon studies. I've talked a little bit about that here.

Again, however, there are some definite bright spots in this field. Recent works have dealt increasingly with intellectual history, and several of the "manifestos" for a new new mormon history in the last edition of JMH also called for more of this type of approach.

There's got to be some good intellectual historians who weigh in on this, no?

I agree with you. Matt is a star of this field. His piece on the Gillites will be another wonderful example. you're very kind to include me in the list.

I think Leigh Schmidt has the tone down cold--I would hold him as the type of historical work we ought to be engaging within Mormonism.

Thanks for the post, Ben. I don't have time to comment more at this point, but will try and join in the conversation at a later point.

Umm, Rameumptom, did you read the entire sentence? I said that he had long been "scrutinized, praised, or engaged" by scholars, offering the many different varieties. Your ellipses cut out the very point you were trying to make.

In fact, did you read any of the post beyond your selective reading of the first paragraph, or did you just want to make a "hit-and-run" comment to boost your ego?

Are you seriously saying that Joseph Smith was "long been...praised" by scholars? Really? Perhaps a handful of non-LDS scholars like Harold Bloom have praised him, but other than a few, most non-LDS scholars have given scathing remarks about him. Of course Brent Metcalfe, Dan Vogel, and other scholars definitely have not praised Joseph Smith so much as called him a genius charlatan. That's not praise in my book.

Or are you only focusing on the faithful and inspiring books written by Joseph's mother and others?
