The first third of the novel dragged, but was okay. The middle third I found absolutely fascinating and (mostly) well done (including the science fiction parts near the end of the middle third). But I found the last third to be dreadful. As a writer once said in a totally different context, but which applies to <em>Added Upon</em> (paraphrased from memory): Start off well, and the audience will follow you anywhere. End well and they will feel satisfied. But have a so-so beginning and an unsatisfying ending - well, no matter how good the middle part is, they just won't enjoy themselves. Added Upon is hardly a terrible book, but I doubt I will ever re-read it unless I'm going to publsh a paper on it or something. Added Upon is a quite interesting novel. I think I read it a dozen times when I was a teen. It was kind of like an early "Saturday's Warriors" sprinkled with a little eternal polygamy.
