Thanks for checking on that, Brandon. Sounds like it's going to be a good conference.

I talked to Kent Powell (Director of Historical Programs at Utah State History) today about the conference's We Shall Remain theme.

The theme is meant to tie in with the keynote speaker who will present on Native American history. They will also have some panels on that subject. But Kent assured me that there would be plenty of spaces for papers on non-Native American topics at the conference as well.

Ok, it looks like they're related projects. Here's the KUED segment's website:

But, from the website I linked to, it doesn't look like that documentary focuses on the Utah nations, so I guess they must be separate documentaries? But that's strange that PBS would promote two documentaries with the same name at the same time.

Here's a link to the "We Shall Remain" website, with a trailer. It ends by having Tecumseh saying, "The master of life has appointed this place for us to light our fires, and here we shall remain." Perserverence in the face of military conquest and forced assimilation is a basic theme of Native American identity and historiography. But, my guess is that only a few of the papers presented at the conference will deal with Natives, so I wonder how applicable it is as a theme.

That is, while your paper can have a lot of Mormon content, you need to spin it as being of interest to residents of the state, not as something attractive only to church members.

"We Shall Remain" is the title of an upcoming KUED (UofU/Salt Lake's PBS station) series on the history of the five tribes native to Utah; I don't know the origin of the phrase but am guessing that it will be made clear in the broadcast. The series is scheduled for April and May. KUED, and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, and other local organizations are sponsoring a lot of local events tied into that program -- the theme for the state history meeting would seem to be part of the package.

The state history meetings always accept some papers that are not tied closely to the theme. Just be sure to cast your proposal as a *Utah* rather than a *Mormon* topic.

I think they are just looking for anything that has to do with Utah history. I'm not sure if they generally don't have enough scholars present so they leave it open ended or if they have so many submissions that they are being lazy.
