The theme is meant to tie in with the keynote speaker who will present on Native American history. They will also have some panels on that subject. But Kent assured me that there would be plenty of spaces for papers on non-Native American topics at the conference as well. Perserverence in the face of military conquest and forced assimilation is a basic theme of Native American identity and historiography. But, my guess is that only a few of the papers presented at the conference will deal with Natives, so I wonder how applicable it is as a theme. The series is scheduled for April and May. KUED, and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, and other local organizations are sponsoring a lot of local events tied into that program -- the theme for the state history meeting would seem to be part of the package. The state history meetings always accept some papers that are not tied closely to the theme.
